If the drive is damaged (and not under warranty) the cost of replacement will be determined mostly by the computer model. It has only started happening today! Click the Repair Disk Permissions button (there is also a Verify Permissions button). What size drive did you install?

A store-bought DVD or a handmade one? It works with an external (USB 2) DVD burner, so it's not the OS. I don't need to burn anything, but reading DVD would be helpful. Now take the 2 cables out of the cable clip (marked blue on the picture).

You could also upgrade the hard drive. I'm going to get the spray air and run the disc a few more times to see if that has any effect.
The suggestion regarding System Profiler is the fist step you should follow. What's always worked for me is to launch Toast, set it to do a Disc Copy - it will recognize the disc in the drive either as a good or bad I was shocked on how easy it actually was. Curiously, CDs still appear on the desktop the same as before, so I've been busy backing up the data that wasn't included in my latest DVD back-up on 650 MB CDs.
It didn't work because the superdrive is about 7.67 inches long, while the plextor is 8-9 inches long.
