I have got one of these which came with some device I bought. Cigarette lighter circuits are often fused at 10 or 15A, which isn’t a whole lot.The best way to proceed is to replace the fuse and see what happens. Some hardware stores sell an adapter that turns one socket into two. There's usually a number printed on the end which tells you the number of amps the fuse is rated for -- that's what you have to match when replacing it.
It could have broken in the past week, would you be able to test it in another car again? If after cleaning the lighter, it still does not work and you have already replaced the fuse, then the lighter itself is probably faulty.
