Ran across this page, and BOOM, problem solved. Now choose System Preferences > Keyboard > Set Up Bluetooth Keyboard. If you can't find a cheap way to fix the built-in keyboard, look on eBay or Craigslist or just go to your local Best Buy or whatever and I'd recommend the Macbook Keyboard Not Responding Each key is highlighted with each keystroke.
Thank you! Logged in to guest and added keyboard and it worked. Maybe we should all learn to whisper electronic nothings into our macbooks' microphone.
If you have any idea what's going on, please help.

Since we stumbled across this fix the problem hasn't surfaced again for us, so maybe it's just a re-alignment of your keyboard preferences after a particular software update? For Wireless keyboards, replacing low batteries should help fix the problem. You may have to register before you can post: click the register link above to proceed. Or Js. You will need to attach a wired mouse to do this.
